Contact Improv Workshop with Mark Young

Sunday, January 12th, 2020

Guelph Dance is pleased to present a Contact Improv workshop with Mark Young all the way from Lasqueti Island, B.C!

This workshop is about lifts. No experience in Contact Improv is required, however, it is considered ‘Advanced’ level CI. Participants should be fit and free from injuries. The work is most suited for all genders and bodies who want to base. Mark has had great success teaching this work to young people at the Conservatory of Dance in Murcia, Spain, and at his studio on Lasqueti Island, B.C.

Participants will use the naturally occurring spiral nature of our bones and muscles to do effortless lifts. “I have an expression, ‘you must fall down to go up.’ Like a see-saw, we will counter-balance our weight, or our partner’s weight, while we work towards up. It’s about lining up bones to support weight, not muscling or forcing.”

With a relaxed and supple body-mind, participants can play with the ‘rides’ that occur in good CI. “Lift happens,” is another expression of Mark. Lifts should happen naturally, without force, without grabbing or destabilizing our partner.
